13.2 Tables are analytical displays
Use a table when readers need exact values or must compare several measures across repeated categories. A strong table:
- places the most important comparison near the left;
- uses clear units in headings;
- orders rows meaningfully;
- aligns numbers by place value;
- uses consistent precision;
- distinguishes missing, suppressed, and zero values;
- avoids decorative colour; and
- highlights only values that require attention.
Do not export an unedited software table. Field names, excessive decimals, repeated totals, and technical codes place unnecessary work on the audience.
