13.2 Tables are analytical displays

Use a table when readers need exact values or must compare several measures across repeated categories. A strong table:

  • places the most important comparison near the left;
  • uses clear units in headings;
  • orders rows meaningfully;
  • aligns numbers by place value;
  • uses consistent precision;
  • distinguishes missing, suppressed, and zero values;
  • avoids decorative colour; and
  • highlights only values that require attention.

Do not export an unedited software table. Field names, excessive decimals, repeated totals, and technical codes place unnecessary work on the audience.
