4.3 Roles without silos

Roles provide primary ownership, not exclusive control. Useful roles may include:

  • project manager or coordinator;
  • data and reproducibility lead;
  • research lead;
  • modelling or projection lead;
  • report editor;
  • presentation designer;
  • recommendation lead; and
  • quality-assurance reviewer.

In a small team, one person may hold several roles. In a larger team, a role may be shared. In both cases, important work should have an owner and a reviewer.

Silos occur when team members understand only their assigned piece. This creates serious integration risks. A modelling lead may use a category definition that differs from the EDA. A presentation designer may simplify a result in a way that changes its meaning. A recommendation lead may propose an action that assumes a model can establish causation. Regular cross-review reduces these risks.
